I often enjoy watching the latest trending music videos that have just came out. It says a lot about current society and what popular viewpoints are.
Today, I watched Justin Timberlake’s video for “Can’t Stop the Feeling”. It’s been awhile since I have listened to anything by him, so I automatically thought back to when “Cry Me a River” was big and I entered this with a lot of apprehensive curiosity.
For me in that time period, I never found him to be a great artist.
So I would have to say this song, “Can’t Stop the Feeling”, was definitely better than all his others before that he had done solo. He’s being comical while also being very appropriate and just all around seems very happy during the video. The entire video gets a rating of 9 in my book. I think I’m being fair.
Then, I watched the music video for “Toothbrush“, a song by DNCE. I had never heard a single song by this group before, let alone this “Toothbrush”. The picture looks kinda 80s-esque, though, so I decided it was worth a try because it was either very strange or very terrible. (Who names their song Toothbrush?)
Turns out it was both. Really lame lyrics about not having to “keep it hush, you can leave a toothbrush at my place” is really romantic, boys. I mean, it will probably work wonders with the youth, though. So it’s a hit. Of course, all the money was spent on the video and none on recruiting real talent. I was absolutely stunned at how ridiculous it was. The set was better than the music, by far. Though it seemed exceptionally odd to have people still being sexualized while you are trying to explain how you are such a good guy, right?
I lost it. I remember saying out loud, “Who the fuck has the money for this shit? And why aren’t they any damn good, eh?”
People with talent could do some good with that money.
Anyways, then all was redeemed when I saw “Panda” by Desiigner. Absolutely fantastic , creepy and drug-induced, it’s everything you imagine tripping to be that it is definitely not. I only clicked on it because I honestly figured it would be horrible and I could laugh really hard for hours.
Go watch that. It’s probably one of the craziest videos I have seen in a long time. Somehow it reminded me of director David Lynch. If you have ever seen one of his films, you will already know what I mean. If not, you probably should, he’s one of the greatest directors of strange films you will ever experience.
To add- I have never heard of this group before either. I definitely have mixed feelings about it. I love the concept, but it tugs on a part of my brain in a way that wasn’t done before.
Odd enough but good job, guys.
That’s all the time we have for today.
Tune in next week for new reviews!
